Description

Strawberry plants make an excellent addition to the home garden. 25 plants will provide enough strawberries for a family of four. The attractive plants can be grown as a groundcover or landscape ornamental, or in a traditional bed. Strawberries need full sun to produce the best crop, but you can get a harvestable crop with as little as 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Increasing the amount of sunlight that your strawberries receive will result in more and better quality berries.

Technical Specifications

  • Allstar Strawberries: (Zone 4-8) Large mid-season berry. Similar to Jewell in ripening and production. Good flavored, winter hardy, good plant maker, good color. Worthy of trial - limited quantities.
  • Chandler (Zone 5-8) is a favorite of commercial growers.  These June bearers can produce fruit 3-4 weeks under proper conditions.  Your plants could produce a pint of berries each under optimal conditions!
  • Earliglow Strawberries: (zone 4-8) An excellent flavored early berry! This strawberry plant produces a medium to large strawberry that is excellent for road side sales and home use. This berry has been a favorite for years and no sugar needed. One of the best flavored berries out today. #1 FOR SWEETNESS!!!
  • Honeoye Strawberries: (Zone 3-8) A beautifully large to extra large red berry that produces early. It's a leading variety for holding it's size during the long harvest season. Winter hardy. This is our favorite berry. Flavor is very good and processes well as long as you pick fruit before it over ripens.
  • Jewel Strawberries: (Zone 4-8) This is a great all around berry to have with large to extra large, firm strawberries with excellent color. Great flavor. A great mid to late season berry. A best seller.
  • Sparkle (Zone 4-8) is a very hardy variety that yields medium dark red berries with excellent sweet flavor! These will grow approximately 6 – 8 inches tall and 12 inches across.  Due to root rot they must be planted in well-drained soil.  Ripens in June and they are self-pollinating.
  • Sure Crop (Zone 4-8) is an older variety but still a favorite for home gardening!  Ripens in June and they are self-pollinating.

Additional Information

  • You are purchasing Bare Root Strawberry Crowns
  • Full sun is preferred for all varieties of strawberries, but a minimum of 6 hours is required.
  • Most varieties will produce in a matted row, but keeping runners trimmed will increase your yield.
  • Strawberries have shallow root systems.  Most plants will be approximately 8 inches tall at maturity.
  • Well drained soil is a must; as plants are susceptible to root rot.  Sandy soil is best.  Add extra organic matter.
  • You will need supplemental watering when rainfall is not sufficient.
  • Plant as soon as the soil is dry and able to be worked - March or April for most areas.

Only in the ground a couple days and already green leaves sprouting. Difficult to give 5 stars so early after planting, but already almost all have started to sprout.

I split the crown with a friend, planted my half and was pleased to see leaves forming. put my friend's crowns in the kitchen sink, sprinkled water on top. A few days later I checked her crowns and to my amazement they too had grown leaves...in my sink no less. I might add the asparagus did the same thing in my sink. VERY HEALTHY PLANTS/CROWN /ROOTS!
