The Western Yellow Pine is one of America’s most abundant tree species. You may have also heard the Western Yellow Pine called a Ponderosa Pine, a name given for the tree’s colossal size at maturity. This huge evergreen displays dark yellow-green bundles of needles and is adorned with reddish-brown pinecones 3”-6” in length with sharp “teeth.” The scaly bark emits a fragrance of that smells like butterscotch or vanilla. The Western Yellow Pine makes a great accent or specimen tree, windbreak, buffer strip, or mass landscape planting. A mature tree can grow up to 60’-130’ in height and with a spread of 25’-30’ at the crown of the tree.
