The ‘Gayfeather’ is a hardy, Native American plant that is well worth giving a spot in your garden. 'Gayfeather' have grass-like leaves toward the base of the plant, but extend up the stem to the lovely red-purple flower cluster. The feathered flower heads are arranged in a long, dense spike blooming from the top down. The tufted flowers provide a strong upright effect.
Starting in July, their brilliant shade of red-purple begins to break through and lasts through September. The mounds typically grow 2-4 feet tall and 10-18 inch spread. The ‘Gayfeather’ is tolerant of drought, clay soil, summer heat & humidity.
The common name of this beautiful plant includes ‘Gayfeather’ and ‘Blazing Star’, also known as ‘Liatris’.
Tip: Potted dormant perennials can be kept in a well-lit cool/cold area (i.e. garage, shed, even in a protected area outdoors) until ready for spring planting. Do not allow them to completely dry out.
