You might mistake the American Larch, also known as a Tamarack, as an evergreen, but this unique tree is a deciduous conifer. In spring, this open, conical shaped tree puts on clusters of short, slender, bright-green needles and come autumn, the needles will turn a golden yellow to provide amazing color to your landscape. The American Larch also produces small, egg-shaped cones, but they are not particularly showy. Primarily this tree is used for pulpwood, but is also good when used for posts, rough lumber, and firewood. Plant the American Larch by itself in an open area or with other green conifers or shrubs for a striking color contrast. The American Larch is a moderate to fast growing tree and at maturity can reach up to 50’-70’ in height with a spread of 20’-30’. This tree does best when grown in full sun and moist, well-drained, acidic soil and cannot tolerate full shade or dry soil.
