The Butternut, also known as the White Walnut, bears nuts with rich, sweet, buttery flavor. The Butternut Tree is one of the hardiest of all nut trees. This tree a native of North America makes an attractive shade tree with its rounded form and dark green foliage. The tree will grow 40 to 60 feet, with a spread of 40 feet and will have cluster of large egg-shaped nuts. Plant this tree in well-drained, rich, moist, deep soil. This tree is somewhat self-pollinating but best to plant in groups. In the fall the green leaves will turn to a yellow color.
