The Black Gum Tree is an excellent landscaping choice! Native to North America, this beautiful, stately tree is considered a shade tree and an ornamental tree. Black Gums exhibit a dense canopy of simple, ovate, extremely glossy, dark green leaves about 2”-6” in length.
Come fall, the foliage of this medium-sized tree turns vivid shades of yellow, orange, bright red, purple and scarlet, making quite a statement. Black Gums produce a small, bluish-black fruit providing an abundant and assorted food source for wildlife attracting various birds and mammals, including ruffed grouse, wild turkey, songbirds, small rodents, and white-tailed deer, just to name a few. The high fat and fiber in the fruit is also an important food source for black bears.
The Black Gum Tree makes a great accent or specimen tree when used in your yard or just to line the street. They will reach a height of 30’-50’ and a canopy spread of up to 20’-30’ at maturity for generations to enjoy. Black Gum Trees grow best in fertile, moist, swampy, acidic soil with full to partial sun.
