High Tunnel Vent High tunnels are generally vented by rolling up the sides and opening the doors on each end. However, additional ventilation is often needed on extremely hot and humid days. The best location for maximum ventilation is through the roof. Ken-Bar’s High Tunnel Vent is a roof-installed ventilation sytem that provides for a chimney-effect movement of hot air out of the tunnel. However, these vents are intended to be used for supplemental ventilation only; they are not the primary mechanism for temperature control in high tunnels. The High Tunnel Vent is constructed of crystal-clear rigid plastic mounted on an aluminum frame that measures 36" x 21". The size of the actual opening of the vent is 30" x 14". With the auto-temperature opener, the vent opens and closes automatically within preset temperature ranges The chart below demonstrates the dramatic temperature relief provided by one vent in a 18 inch x 36 foot tunnel. For example, at a height of five feet, the air is 16 degrees F cooler than in an unvented tunnel at 1 PM (click image below to see larger version).   A further benefit from venting warm air at the top of the tunnel is mositure control. Less moisture in the air will mean less diesease for most crops grown in tunnels. (Instructions are included with each vent). Slits are made in the plastic so that the vent can be inserted and positioned on the outside of the tunnel. To prevent water leakage, be careful not to cut the slits any larger than the aluminum frame of the vent. When the vent is in place, insert the bent wire (wiggle wire, wire lock) into the channels on each of the four sides. (For the first installation, the job is easier with a second person.) After installation, trim the plastic so that there is about a 2-inch flap beyond the wire inserts. To maximize ventilation, the vent should be installed as high up on the roof as possible.
