Kool Ray Ultra Liquid Greenhouse Shading is specifically designed to lower inside greenhouse temperatures during the warmer Spring and Summer growing season. During the course of the year, Kool Ray's environmentally friendly ingredients will slowly wear off (weather permitting) allowing for increased light levels as the daylight decreases. Classic works best when spray applied.

Technical Specifications

  • 1 gallon
  • Standard dilution rate is 1 part Kool Ray to 8 parts water
  • 1:8 = 9 gallons x 175 = 1575 square feet
  • 1:5 = 6 gallons x 175 = 1050 square feet

Additional Information

Kool Ray Ultra was tested as follows: Kool Ray Ultra was applied over standard greenhouse glass. Data was obtained through controlled laboratory findings and are intended as a guide only. The light source was fluorescent lighting measured 55 inches from the greenhouse glass. Light was measured in foot-candles with a GE 214 light meter.

Many factors will effect actual shading density and light transmission in the field. The intent of the study was to provide relative values of Ultra's shading capacity for the grower to use as a reference only. Ultra's shading density is influenced by other variables including accuracy in measurement and mixing of KOOL RAY and application technique. Additionally, plastic glazing is translucent and has inherent light diffusing characteristics that should be taken into account when calculating shade requirements.

Applications Guidelines: KOOL RAY can be used over most types of greenhouse exteriors. It can be applied by brush, roller or spray. Spray application is generally the most efficient method of applying KOOL RAY and will usually result in a more uniform shade density and more even wear. Spray tip sizes of .03, .04, .06, .08 and angles of 65° - 85° work well. Consult your supplier of spray equipment for their specific recommendations.

Dilution Ratios: KOOL RAY is a super concentrated formula designed to be diluted with water. Standard dilution rate is 1 part KOOL RAY to 15 parts water. Ratios can be adjusted according to the grower's particular needs. For a denser shade, several lighter, more diluted coats are recommended over a single, less diluted, heavy coat. A heavy coat can tend to cause "mud cracking" which can lead to eventual flaking and less even wear.

Coverage: Coverage will vary according to method of application, applicator, and dilution ratio. Spray will normally provide best coverage of approximately 175 sq. ft. per gallon after dilution. For instance, a 1:15 dilution of 1 gallon of KOOL RAY ULTRA to 15 gallons of water yields a total of 16 gallons of liquid shade. A 1:10 dilution yields a total of 11 gallons of shade. To determine coverage, multiply the diluted gallon amount by 175. Example - 1:15 = 16 gallons x 175 = 2800 sq. ft. 1:10 = 11 gallons x 175 = 1925 sq. ft. Higher dilution rations (less concentrated) result in a lighter shade, lower dilution ratios result in a darker shade.

Time, Temperature and Wear: Best to apply in the morning above 50°F (10°C), after dew has lifted or late afternoon. Application within 12 to 24 hours of rain may result in premature wash off. Frost will also loosen shade. Residues on new plastic can act as a release agent causing lack of adhesion and wash off of KOOL RAY ULTRA. A mist coat of ULTRA over new plastic followed by a regular application has proven effective in promoting normal adhesion and wear. Application during hot, midday sun will tend to bake the shade more quickly, thus enhancing durability. In addition, plastic glazing heated by the sun and/or worn by the weather is more porous and will promote greater adhesion. Rate of wear is also dependent on weather conditions.
