Description

Asparagus is a long-lived perennial vegetable crop that is enjoyed by many gardeners. It can be productive for 20 or more years if given proper care. Select the new all-male hybrid asparagus varieties such as Jersey Giant, and Jersey Knight. These varieties produce spears only on male plants. Seeds produced on female plants fall to the ground and become a seedling weed problem in the garden. Female plants also have to expend more energy to produce the seeds that decreases the yields of asparagus spears on female plants. The all-male hybrids out-yield the old Mary Washington varieties by 3 to 1.

Harvest asparagus by snapping 7"-9" spears with tight tips. There is no need to cut asparagus below the soil with a knife. This may injure other buds on the crown that will send up new spears. The small stub that is left in the soil after snapping, dries up and disintegrates. A new spear does not come up at the same spot, but comes up from another bud that enlarges on another part of the crown.

Asparagus is very perishable and should be harvested in the morning when air temperatures are cool. After picking, immerse the spears in ice-cold water to remove the heat; then drain the water and place the spears in plastic bags.

Purchased 25 2yr old crowns and delivery was prompt. 80% average in size, 10% large and 10% on the smaller side. Two weeks in so far and all but four has stems emerging. Others are growing, but just not through dirt yet. Planting a 2yr crown will be a huge benefit come next spring. Can't beat the price for what you get.

Set out the plants the same day they arrived in the mail. I waited patiently and they all came up. Should have covered the first ones, as they got frost bit. But they recovered.

The instructions were simple and clear. I kept them in my fridge a few days, then soaked and planted just as they said to. The mold came right off, as they said it would. And now there are a bunch of little asparagus sprouts! Very excited to eat them (but I will wait and let them grow more, as instructed). This was super easy even though I'd never even SEEN asparagus growing before.

We ordered and received these in 3 days. The crowns looked healthy and were nice size. We ordered 50 crowns on Tuesday night, received them on Friday, planted on Sunday in loam and manure with two inches of mulch, and now (two weeks and two days later) 45 of the crowns are well up. We actually received a total of 56 crowns counting the very small ones that were included. We will order from Growers Solution again. Thank you.
